Today I am reminded of just how critical good ole H2O is to our bodies
Coming home to your pregnant wife hunched over in excruciating pain is not something you want to experience! This certainly wasn’t what I expected as I pulled into my driveway just happy to be home after a long day at work, however this is exactly what I arrived home to.
I have never seen my wife, Tiffany, in the amount of pain she was in today. With her being pregnant you can imagine where both our thoughts were going – but after an ambulance ride to the hospital and 5 hours in the emergency room, we discovered that she was suffering from kidney stones.
Now we don’t really know what caused Tiff to develop kidney stones, but there is a strong prevalence of developing kidney stones from a lack of hydration.
If you’ve ever personally experienced or seen someone passing a kidney stone you will most likely pledge to yourself never to become dehydrated – let’s just say it looks BRUTAL!
Aside from proper kidney function, water is essential for brain function, healthy metabolism, and digestion. Our bodies are made up of anywhere from 60-80% water. Water helps circulate oxygen, lubricate joints, and promotes proper muscle function. Our lymphatic system doesn’t work without water which makes up about 95% of this vitally necessary system. When you are dehydrated you are more prone to infection and inflammation. We could keep going but you get the point – don’t neglect the importance of water to keep your body in an optimal state.
Aim to drink at least half your body weight in ounces of water everyday. If you exercise, drink coffee, or consume alcohol you should bump that up even higher,
Drink up my friends and steer cleer of the ill effects of dehydration including those awful kidney stones!
